Film Development Workshop

Step into the lab (kitchen) and take full control of your creative process. Learn the tactile, rewarding skill of transforming your exposed rolls into negatives.

In This Workshop

  • A person in a blue denim shirt sitting at a wooden table, handling a black plastic bag.

    Preparation (30 min)

Weโ€™ll set up and go through the equipment used, extract your film from the canister and prepare it for development without seeing what youโ€™re doing! Donโ€™t worry, youโ€™ll use dummy rolls to practice first.

  • Person pouring dark liquid into a clear measuring container on a kitchen counter.

    Your Chemical Romance (1.5h)

Once the film is ready to go, the alchemy begins. Youโ€™ll take full control of the โ€œWet Benchโ€, learning to mix your chemistry, and managing the agitation cycles of the development tank. This is where the science happens - using time and movement to coax the images out of your exposed film.

  • Someone holding a strip of film in a bathroom with gray tiled wall.

    The Reveal

Once the development process is done, youโ€™ll hang your negatives and get a preview of the images weโ€™ve uncovered. Because film needs time to dry and set, your negatives will be ready for pick up or mail out the following day, properly cut and sleeved.

What Youโ€™ll Learn

  • What Happens

Learn what development does to your film and how images are revealed. Youโ€™ll become familiar with the equipment used and the steps youโ€™ll need to take for before processing a roll.

  • Loading & Handling

Youโ€™ll gain the confidence to handle your film completely blind. Master the tactile skill of loading film onto reels using a lightproof changing bag, the most challenging step of the process.

  • The Development Process

Bring your potential to reality by getting your hands onto the alchemy of the craft. Learn the end to end workflow from loading your tank, mixing the chemicals, transforming your exposed roll into negatives.

FAQs

  • Not at all. This course covers all the basics and includes some advanced tips. For the most challenging part of the process, extracting your film, you get to practice in the light with dummy rolls so you can get the full experience without risking damaging your shots.

  • Our workshops currently only cover Black & White film development.

  • Yes, weโ€™ll be working on your own exposed film, make sure itโ€™s black and white, and fully exposed so that youโ€™ll actually get results!

Both 35mm and medium format film is accepted.

  • Wet film is incredibly fragile and acts like a magnet for dust. To ensure your negatives are clean and perfectly flat, they need to hang-dry in our controlled environment for several hours. Theyโ€™ll be ready for pick-up or mail-out the following day.

  • If you need to cancel, please let us know 3 days in advance for a full refund. Inside that 3-day window, bookings are final, but fully transferable to a friend.
